A catastrophe took place in Ahmedabad on Thursday when an Air India flight smashed into the BJ Medical College hostel building. The crash has reportedly killed five medical students and injured dozens of them.
Air India‘s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, which was carrying 242 passengers on its way to London, crashed minutes after departing from the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport. The plane did not gain sufficient lift and crashed on the college campus at about 1:40 pm.
The aircraft was bound for London Gatwick airport and was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew – 53 of whom were British.
Police added in the hours following the horrific fireball they anticipate there to be “no survivors”.
In a message the airline explained: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick was involved in an accident on 12 June 2025.“.
“At this stage, we are establishing the facts and will make further announcements at the earliest moment.”
Connor’s 242 people included 169 Indian travellers, one Canadian and seven Portuguese nationals as well as the Brits.

King Charles II stated he was “desperately shocked” at Thursday’s air crash in India and sent “prayers and deepest possible sympathies” to the families of the victims.
“My wife and I have been horrifically shocked by the horrific tragedy in Ahmedabad this morning,” the monarch posted on Instagram, describing it as a “heartbreaking and traumatic moment“.
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer described the crash as “devastating”, while his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi called it “heartbreaking beyond words”.
Air India chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran has characterized the crash as a “tragic accident” and a “devastating event” and reported that emergency response teams are at the scene.
Six teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and two teams of the Border Security Force (BSF) have been put to work on the rescue and relief missions, officials stated.
The BSF further stated that two of its squads from the frontier headquarters local field office have been dispatched to the location. They were also joined by workers from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), the responsibility for securing airports, who were also the first responders. They were accompanied by local police and fire teams .
